Understanding Sunrise, Sunset & Twilight
What Causes Sunrise and Sunset?
Sunrise and sunset occur due to Earth's rotation on its axis. As Earth rotates, different parts of the planet face the sun, creating the cycle of day and night. The sun doesn't actually "rise" or "set"โit's our perspective from Earth's surface that creates this illusion.
The exact times of sunrise and sunset vary based on your latitude, longitude, and the time of year. Locations closer to Earth's poles experience more dramatic variations, including periods of continuous daylight (midnight sun) or darkness (polar night).
Golden Hour
The period shortly after sunrise and before sunset when sunlight is softer and warmer. Photographers love this time for its beautiful, diffused lighting.
Blue Hour
The period of twilight when the sun is below the horizon and indirect sunlight takes on a blue shade. Occurs twice dailyโbefore sunrise and after sunset.
Why Twilight Matters
Twilight is divided into three stages based on the sun's angle below the horizon:
- Civil Twilight (0-6ยฐ): Enough natural light for most outdoor activities
 - Nautical Twilight (6-12ยฐ): Horizon visible at sea for navigation
 - Astronomical Twilight (12-18ยฐ): Sky dark enough for astronomical observations
