Understanding Moon Phases

Learn about each phase of the lunar cycle and what makes them unique

🌑

New Moon

The Moon is positioned between Earth and the Sun. The illuminated side faces away from Earth, making it nearly invisible in the night sky.

🌒

Waxing Crescent

A small sliver of the Moon becomes visible on the right side as it begins its journey toward fullness. Best viewed in the evening sky.

🌓

First Quarter

Half of the Moon's surface is illuminated, appearing as a perfect half-circle. This phase occurs about 7 days after the New Moon.

🌔

Waxing Gibbous

More than half but not quite full, the Moon continues to grow in brightness. "Gibbous" means humped or convex in Latin.

🌕

Full Moon

The entire face of the Moon is illuminated by the Sun. This occurs when the Moon is on the opposite side of Earth from the Sun.

🌖

Waning Gibbous

After the Full Moon, the illuminated portion begins to shrink. Still mostly bright, but decreasing each night.

🌗

Last Quarter

Half of the Moon is illuminated on the left side. This phase occurs about 21 days after the New Moon, marking three-quarters through the lunar cycle.

🌘

Waning Crescent

A thin crescent remains visible on the left side before the cycle completes. Best viewed in the early morning sky before sunrise.

Why Do Moon Phases Occur?

Moon phases are caused by the Moon's orbit around Earth and the changing angles between the Sun, Moon, and Earth. As the Moon orbits our planet every 29.5 days, we see different amounts of its sunlit half.

The Three Key Points:

  • 1.

The Sun always illuminates half of the Moon's surface

  • 2.

The Moon orbits Earth once every 27.3 days (orbital period)

  • 3.

Our viewing angle from Earth changes, revealing different portions of the illuminated half

Note: The Moon doesn't actually change shape or emit light. We simply see varying amounts of reflected sunlight as the Moon travels in its orbit around Earth.

📸 Moon Photography Tips

Capture stunning lunar images at every phase

Full Moon

Use a telephoto lens (200mm+) and shoot around sunset or sunrise for warmer tones. Keep ISO low (100-400) for maximum detail.

Crescent Moon

Capture during blue hour for stunning contrast. Use spot metering to properly expose the bright crescent without blowing out highlights.

Quarter Moon

The shadows along the terminator (day/night line) reveal incredible lunar surface detail. Perfect for crater photography.

Any Phase

Use manual focus and a sturdy tripod. Try bracketing exposures to capture detail in both the bright Moon and surrounding sky.

Essential Equipment:

  • DSLR or mirrorless camera
  • Telephoto lens (200-600mm)
  • Sturdy tripod
  • Remote shutter release

🌱 Gardening by Moon Phases

For centuries, gardeners have planted and harvested according to lunar cycles. While scientific evidence is mixed, many traditional farmers swear by these practices based on the Moon's gravitational influence on water in soil and plants.

🌱New Moon to First Quarter

Plant above-ground crops that produce seeds outside the fruit (lettuce, spinach, grains)

🌾First Quarter to Full Moon

Plant above-ground crops with seeds inside (tomatoes, peppers, beans)

🥔Full Moon to Last Quarter

Plant root crops and perennials (carrots, potatoes, bulbs)

✂️Last Quarter to New Moon

Rest period - focus on weeding, pruning, and soil preparation

Note: These are traditional practices. Modern gardening success depends primarily on proper timing for your climate, soil quality, and plant care.

Understanding Moon Phases

The Moon goes through eight distinct phases during its 29.5-day lunar cycle. These phases occur because we see different amounts of the Moon's sunlit half as it orbits Earth. Our moon phase calendar shows you the current phase, upcoming full and new moons, and a complete lunar calendar for 2025.

Whether you're planning photography sessions, gardening by lunar cycles, or simply curious about the night sky, our moon phase tracker provides accurate, up-to-date information. Use the location-based moonrise and moonset times to know exactly when the Moon will be visible in your area.

How to Use This Moon Phase Calendar

📱 Current Phase

Why Track Moon Phases?

  • Astronomy & Stargazing: New moons provide the darkest skies for observing stars and deep-sky objects. Full moons are perfect for lunar photography and casual moon watching.
  • Photography: Each moon phase offers unique photographic opportunities. Crescent moons provide dramatic compositions, while full moons illuminate landscapes naturally.
  • Gardening & Agriculture: Traditional farmers and gardeners plant and harvest according to lunar cycles, believing the Moon's gravitational pull affects water in soil and plants.
  • Outdoor Activities: Plan camping trips, night hikes, or beach visits around moon phases. A full moon provides natural illumination, while new moons are ideal for meteor shower watching.
  • Cultural & Spiritual: Many cultures and traditions mark time by lunar calendars and celebrate events during specific moon phases.
