Leap Years

📅

2025 is NOT a Leap Year

Leap years occur every 4 years to keep our calendar aligned with Earth's orbit around the Sun. In leap years, February has 29 days instead of 28, making the year 366 days long instead of 365.

Leap Year Rule: A year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4, except for years divisible by 100 (which are not leap years), unless they're also divisible by 400 (which makes them leap years again).

Examples: 2024 is a leap year (divisible by 4), 1900 was not a leap year (divisible by 100 but not 400), 2000 was a leap year (divisible by 400).

Interesting Facts

🗓️ Month Origins

The names of months come from Roman gods, emperors, and numbers:

  • March-June: Named after Roman gods (Mars, Maia, Juno)
  • July-August: Named after Julius and Augustus Caesar
  • September-December: From Latin numbers (7th-10th in old calendar)

📏 Days per Month

Remember the knuckle trick to count days:

  • Knuckles = 31 days (Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Aug, Oct, Dec)
  • Valleys between knuckles = 30 days (Apr, Jun, Sep, Nov)
  • February is the exception with 28/29 days

🌍 Calendar History

The modern Gregorian calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, replacing the Julian calendar. It's the most widely used calendar system in the world today. The old Roman calendar only had 10 months, which is why September-December have names meaning "seventh" through "tenth" even though they're the 9th-12th months.

🎂 Birth Months

Each month has an associated birthstone, flower, and zodiac sign. These traditions date back thousands of years and have been celebrated by various cultures. September is statistically the most common birth month in the United States, while February is the least common.
