📚 History & Origin
Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I, which officially ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day in 1919. In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation changing the name to Veterans Day to honor all American veterans, not just those who died in World War I. Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who died in service, Veterans Day celebrates all who have served in the military.

Veterans Day is observed with parades, ceremonies at war memorials, and moments of silence at 11 a.m. Many communities host special programs at schools, churches, and veterans organizations. Restaurants and businesses often offer free meals and discounts to veterans. The national observance is held at Arlington National Cemetery, where a wreath is laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Many Americans display the flag and thank veterans for their service.
