📚 History & Origin

Originally established in 1885 to honor George Washington's birthday (February 22), the holiday was officially called 'Washington's Birthday.' In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved the celebration to the third Monday in February, which also falls near Abraham Lincoln's birthday (February 12). While the federal holiday is still officially called 'Washington's Birthday,' it is commonly known as 'Presidents Day' and is seen as a day to honor all U.S. presidents, past and present.

🎊 Traditions & Celebrations

Americans celebrate Presidents Day with historical reenactments, educational programs about presidential history, visits to presidential libraries and monuments, and retail sales (famously known as 'Presidents Day sales'). Schools often teach lessons about Washington, Lincoln, and other presidents. Some communities hold parades and patriotic ceremonies.
