About This Holiday
Canada's national day celebrating the anniversary of Confederation on July 1, 1867.
History
Canada Day celebrates the unification of three British North American colonies (Province of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick) into the Dominion of Canada on July 1, 1867. Originally called 'Dominion Day,' it was renamed 'Canada Day' in 1982. The holiday marks Canada's journey toward becoming a fully independent nation.
Traditions
Celebrations include Parliament Hill ceremonies in Ottawa (with the PM's speech), fireworks displays, parades, concerts, barbecues, and wearing red and white. Many communities host festivals, cultural events, and citizenship ceremonies. The day is marked by displays of Canadian flags and patriotic songs including 'O Canada.'
