Why eclipses come in seasons
Each dot is a real 2026 new moon (dark) or full moon (light), placed by how far the Moon sat north or south of the plane of Earth’s orbit at that moment. The Moon’s 5.1° tilt means most months it passes well clear. Eclipses cluster where the dots cross the line, in two seasons about 173 days apart, and those seasons slide earlier by about 19 days each year as the nodes regress.
Total, partial and penumbral
Earth casts two shadows: a dark central umbra and a fainter outer penumbra. In a total eclipse the whole Moon enters the umbra and turns coppery red. In a partial eclipse only part of it does, and a dark bite creeps across the disc. In a penumbral eclipse the Moon only brushes the penumbra and dims so slightly that many people never notice.
Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is visible from the entire night side of Earth at once, which is why you are far more likely to have seen one.

The panel at the top shows the next one. In 2026 there is a total lunar eclipse on March 3 (visible from western North America, East Asia and Australia) and a deep partial eclipse on August 28 (the Americas, Europe and Africa).
When is the next total lunar eclipse visible from the US?
After March 3, 2026, the next total lunar eclipse visible across the United States is June 26, 2029, followed by December 20, 2029.
Why is the Moon red during a total lunar eclipse?
Earth’s atmosphere bends sunlight into the shadow and scatters out the blue, so only red and orange light reaches the Moon: the light of every sunrise and sunset on Earth at once.
Do I need eye protection for a lunar eclipse?
No. A lunar eclipse is just a darkened full moon and is completely safe to watch with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope.
