Full moon names by month

The names used across North America are tied to the month the full moon falls in: January – Wolf Moon; February – Snow Moon; March – Worm Moon; April – Pink Moon; May – Flower Moon; June – Strawberry Moon; July – Buck Moon; August – Sturgeon Moon; September – Corn Moon; October – Hunter’s Moon; November – Beaver Moon; December – Cold Moon. Two names move with the sky instead: the Harvest Moon is whichever full moon falls nearest the September equinox (so it can land in October), and the Hunter’s Moon is the one after it.

Supermoons and blue moons

“Supermoon” isn’t an astronomical term; it usually means a full moon near perigee. We flag full moons closer than 360,000 km, where the disc looks about 7% wider and 15% brighter than average. A blue moon is either the second full moon in a calendar month (the popular meaning, used in this table) or the third of four full moons in an astronomical season (the older Maine Farmers’ Almanac rule). Neither turns the Moon blue.

Are there supermoons in 2026?

Using the common cut-off of a full moon within 360,000 km of Earth, 2026 has supermoons on December 23 (US Eastern dates).

When is the next blue moon?

A monthly blue moon is the second full moon in one calendar month. Upcoming ones (US Eastern dates): May 31, 2026; December 31, 2028; September 30, 2031. Dates can differ in other time zones.

Where do full moon names come from?

The names widely used in the US (Wolf, Snow, Worm, Pink…) were popularized by the Old Farmer’s Almanac and draw on Algonquin, Colonial American and European traditions. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox; the Hunter’s Moon follows it.
